Description
The Power Knot Vortex Condenser Controller (VCC) is a mechanical device installed in the refrigerant line of an existing air-conditioner or refrigeration system. All VCC models achieve over 15% energy saving on air-cooled systems and over 5% energy savings on water-cooled systems. Power Knot supplies models that are sized for small to very large systems and that work on most common refrigerants including R-22 and R-410A.
After you install this device, you will immediately start to save energy, or for the same energy, you will have greater cooling. With no moving parts (except a ball float to show the level of the refrigerant), the Power Knot VCC will outlast your cooling system. You do not need to connect power or water to the VCC and you do not need to schedule any preventive maintenance.
Energy Savings
The VCC will deliver efficiency gains of 15% to 25%. If the cooling unit already has sufficient cooling capacity, then the VCC will deliver electricity savings.
If the cooling unit does not have sufficient cooling capacity, the VCC will increase the cooling capacity of the system by 15% to 25%.
With a VCC installed, heat pump systems will save energy in winter heating mode as well as summer cooling mode.
Installation
The VCC is plumbed in the refrigerant line of the existing cooling system or heat pump. You have to drain down the refrigerant in the system, mount the VCC, connect the VCC, and restore the refrigerant. This installation requires a certified HVAC technician, and takes a couple of hours.
If you have several cooling units, a technician can complete the installation of several VCC units in a day.
The chief functions of the VCC are to lower the head pressure and increase the capacity of the condenser. The lower pressure makes the compressor motor draw less current and use less energy. The increased capacity enhances the condenser’s ability to reject heat, which in turn delivers a colder refrigerant to the evaporator.
The VCC varies and controls the amount of refrigerant held in the condenser for heat rejection. The hotter the ambient temperature, the less refrigerant is held back in the condenser coils (and the more refrigerant resides in the VCC). The colder the ambient temperature, the more refrigerant is held back in the condenser coils. Refrigerants work most efficiently within a narrow band of pressure and temperature. The VCC allows the refrigerant to remain closer to the most efficient band of temperature and pressure.
The VCC is a simple device that employs complex principles of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and diurnal variation to optimize system efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency is perhaps the most important technology businesses can use to reduce operating expenses and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The USA Energy Information Administration states that HVAC and refrigeration systems consume over 24% of all electricity in the United States each year.
Efficiency of cooling systems represents a major opportunity for businesses to reduce costs.
